More to higher education than purely vocational studies.
Congratulations to all of our potential and current applicants who have completed their HSC, VCE, OP or other state awards.
For those still considering, perhaps you might like to read this article which appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald on Decmber 19th by 2007 HSC student Vikram Joshi. The article is entitled "Give us thinkers rather than droids for the economy"
Here is an extract:
You may ask why we should bother studying Latin, Greek or Sanskrit. Some schools offer subjects such as morality, philosophy and ethics, and you may wonder why anyone should undergo the trauma of learning something that may not have any practical use in later life.
A lot of these more quirky subjects ranging from arts, classics and languages, offer two things. Firstly, they offer stimulus to the mind. You are cast into the thoughts and values of people more than 2000 years ago who were trying to create the society we now live in. To some at least, that offers insight and inspiration. The greatest insight and inspiration that vocational subjects offer is evaluating and assessing the contexts and concerns of issues and implications until you do not know what you are doing anymore.
We agree Vikram.
Campion expands it's teaching space and adds a lake!
Due to the growth in student numbers at Campion College Australia, new air conditioned buildings have been put in place for the 2008 academic year. This temporary building (pictured being constructed below) will be used for teaching and office space and is a welcome addition to the College.
The building was donated to Campion by a generous donor and will see Campion's teaching space increase significantly.
The lake was an initative of the College that will further ensure Campion's self-sufficient use of water. It will augment the two large water tanks which are in current use at Campion to collect rainwater from its main building.
Campion encourages students to save water and to be aware of their responsibilites to their communites. Students who are employed by the College to work on the grounds are encouraged to recycle water under Campion's plan to be self sufficient in its use of water.
Facilities Manager Paul Kennedy, who undertook both projects, is keen to ensure that the environment at Campion is conducive to study. The 10 hectares of grounds provide students with enormous opportunites to maximise their academic achievement by providing the appropriate atmosphere. "The large city campuses of the larger universities just cannot provide the type of amentiy that Campion is proud of," said Mr Kennedy. "These university campuses have student numbers in the thousands which do not provide an optimal atmosphere for study".
Mr Kennedy encourages students to think about this before making their applications to those universities.

Both Stacy and her husband John have an intimate knowledge of Catholic Higher Education in the United States and understand the issues that small colleges have in promoting study abroad. Athena understands that many small colleges are unable to provide resources for study abroad. Cerdon edges out Bede Polding College to win inaugural Campion Knowledge Challenge
A team of highly intelligent students from Year 10 at Cerdon College are the winners of the first "Campion Knowledge Challenge".
The Campion Challenge was developed by Campion College Australia as a way to celebrate the Catholic Liberal Arts in Australia. The Campion World Youth Day Student Committee suggested that Campion needed to involve local schools in the celebration of the great tradition of Catholic Liberal Arts and this was enthusiastically embraced by a number of schools.
All schools in the Parramatta diocese were invited and eight teams were entered including teams from Caroline Chisholm, Marian and Xavier Colleges.

World Youth Day Icon and Cross visit Campion
On a cool but bright afternoon on July 19th, Campion was privileged to receive the WYD Cross and Icon as it made its way around the Parramatta diocese for a day of tertiary education encounters in Western Sydney. The Cross was welcomed by about sixty students and friends of Campion College. Overall about one hundred people had an encounter with the Cross and Icon. One of the many highlights of the day was the open-air stations of the Cross. The cross carriers did a sterling job with the Collitts family bearing much of the burden. A vote of thanks to all bearers.
Inaugural inter-varsity debate
Another tradition was also established after the departure of the Cross and Icon with a debate between the Law School of the University of Notre Dame and students of Campion's Bachelor of Arts in the Liberal Arts. The topic was "That the Catholic Faith belongs in the Public Square" with Campion adopting the negative case. After a rousing debate which hinged upon the definition, the affirmative case triumphed (we'll get them next time!-ed.) The outcome of the debate highlights the need for Catholics to speak up on the important issues. We hope to establish this tradition of inter-varsity debates certainly each year if not each semester.
Great night at the annual St Edmund Campion Dinner
At Campion we do things differently to other tertiary providers. On Friday 4th June, a formal dinner was held to mark the feast day of our patron, St Edmund Campion. The evening began with Vespers followed by an outstanding address from Bishop Anthony Fisher on the issue of stem cell research. This was, in turn, followed by the St Edmund Campion dinner proper as staff and students together enjoyed a convivial and pleasant evening. A formal question time was also included which allowed students free range to ask questions arising from the bishop's address. Campion's traditions are already being set by our students and staff. The warmth and intimacy of the dinner and the distinguished level of intellectual discussion which ensued reflect Campion's focus on the personal development of the mind of every individual. For a full text of Bishop Anthony Fisher's speech,"Clones, Consciences and Campion" click here.
