Overview

This unit focuses on the study of the Latin language within the context of the literary tradition of Ancient Rome. Besides completing the study of the Latin syntax, initiated in the previous semester, students will engage in the reading and translation of selected texts of Latin authors, such as Sallust, Cicero and Catullus. The students will be introduced to the problems connected with the transmission of the text and with the linguistic phenomenon of ‘text variety’, namely the relation of the language and its social environments, and its variations in response to changes in context and use (i.e. literary genre). The history of reception of the texts of the authors examined during the course will be explored. Students will also engage in the study of Latin prosody, in the metric reading of Latin poetry and in Latin composition.

Learning outcomes

Successful completion of this unit will enable students to:

a) Demonstrate an understanding of the problems (i.e. pronunciation) connected with the study of ancient languages.
b) Demonstrate an understanding of the problems connected with the transmission of texts.
c) Demonstrate an understanding of syntax of the Latin language.
d) Demonstrate to have acquired a satisfactory amount of the Latin lexicon.
e) Demonstrate to have acquired a high level of proficiency in Latin composition.
f) Demonstrate to be able to translate syntactically complex texts from Latin into English.
g) Demonstrate an understanding of Latin prosody and be able to engage in the metric reading of Latin poetry.
h) Demonstrate an understanding of the evolution of the Latin language in the development of the Roman literary tradition.
i) Demonstrate an understanding of the ‘text variety’ (i.e. relation of language and its social environment; literary genre; author’s style; etc.) of the Latin language.
j) Demonstrate an understanding of the relation between the morphology, syntax and lexicon of the Latin and the English languages.
