Overview
This unit of study introduces revelation in the shared Judaeo-Christian tradition of the Old Testament and its fulfilment in the incarnation, the cross and the resurrection of Jesus Christ as presented and reflected on in the Christian New Testament. Students will be introduced to the topics of canonicity, inspiration, the relationship between Scripture and Tradition, the historical-critical method and contemporary methods of biblical criticism. The content and major themes of the various books of the Old and New Testaments will be treated.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this unit of study, students will be able to:
- develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the function of Scripture as Revelation;
- familiarise the students with the structure and content of the different parts of Scripture;
- develop students’ knowledge of the historical, social, geographical and religious background to the Bible;
- assist students to understand the literary perspectives of biblical study and the importance of contemporary critical methods of biblical interpretation;
- relate biblical study to the life of the Church and to the broader theological project;
- demonstrate the importance of clear written expression, concise logical essay structure and the appropriate use of referencing and bibliography in compliance with academic conventions;
- develop students’ ability to summarise and communicate in a logical, coherent and persuasive manner;
- encourage students’ confidence in constructively participating in group work and tutorial events by undertaking required readings and contributing with clarity and coherence.
