16 Aug 2023

Campion College is pleased to announce the forthcoming symposium on "Shakespeare and Education,” which will take place on 22 and 23 September 2023 at Campion College’s campus in Toongabbie, Western Sydney.

The Shakespeare Symposium is a unique opportunity for scholars, educators, enthusiasts and the general public to gather and engage in thought-provoking conversations about the life, works and legacy of William Shakespeare.

The keynote address from Prof. Liam Semler, University of Sydney academic and co-editor of Reimagining Shakespeare Education (Cambridge University Press, 2023), will explore the challenges of over-systematization (SysEd) in institutional settings and what role collaborative Shakespeare education projects might play in and beyond such settings.

Additional speakers include Emeritus Prof. Will Christie (Australian National University), Prof. Simon Haines (Ramsay Centre), Dr. Jennifer Clement (University of Queensland), Dr. Colin Dray (Campion College), Dr. Kishore Saval (Australian Catholic University), Dr. Julian Lamb (University of Wollongong), Dr. Aidan Coleman (Southern Cross University) and Ms. Angela Schumann (PhD candidate at Monash University).

In anticipation of the event, Dr. Stephen McInerney, Symposium Convenor and Director of Campion College’s Centre for the Study of the Western Tradition, shared his excitement, stating: "This symposium promises to shed new light on the profound influence of Shakespeare's legacy on education. We look forward to welcoming participants from all walks of life as we consider why and how we teach Shakespeare, and what Shakespeare continues to teach us”.

Registration for the Shakespeare Symposium is now open. Two-day tickets are available for $90 per person while a one-day ticket will cost $55 per person. Concession pricing is also available for current tertiary students.
