LAN311: Virgil

[Please note that LAN302 Pagans and Christians from Augustus to Augustine will not be offered in 2023]

If you are reading an ancient text for the first time, the best translation is the one which engages your attention.  Guidance on specific translations has already been given. Please contact your lecturer for more information.

We will be reading Virgil’s Eclogues. A copy of the Latin text will be provided at the beginning of the semester.

You will be required to show knowledge of Virgil’s other two major works, in particular the Aeneid. In order of importance, you should read the following.

VIRGIL, The Aeneid

VIRGIL, The Georgics

HOMER, The Odyssey

THEOCRITUS, Idylls (esp. 1, 3-11, 20, 27)

A general history of Rome with good coverage of the period in which Virgil was writing is Mary Beard’s SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome (Profile Books, 2016).

LAN204

The only compulsory text is Ashley Carter, Latin Momentum Tests for GCSE (BCP, 2003; now Bloomsbury, 2018) which you should already possess. You should read as much as possible about the history of ancient Rome. A good general history to start with is Mary Beard’s SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome (Profile Books, 2016).

GRE302: The Genres of Greek Literature

If you are reading an ancient text for the first time, the best translation is the one which engages your attention.  Guidance on specific translations has already been given. Please contact your lecturer for more information. We will be using the same unit reader as the one prescribed for GRE301 in semester 1.

HOMER, The Odyssey

HERODOTUS, The Histories

AESCHYLUS, The Oresteia

A good general history of Greece is A. R. Burn’s Pelican History of Greece (1966), later republished as The Penguin History of Greece (1990).
