Last Thursday’s Formal Hall welcomed Campion College’s very own History Lecturer, Dr Steven Chavura, as guest speaker. In a compelling address that combined personal reflection with critical insight, Dr Chavura shared highlights from his recent trip to London, where he participated in the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) Conference.

Dr Chavura began by expressing gratitude to Campion College for supporting his attendance, which included a speaking engagement at a pre-conference event alongside former Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Addressing an audience of Australian academics, journalists and political figures, Dr Chavura spoke on the state of the nation and the need for renewed civic values, citing Campion College as a key contributor to Australia’s intellectual and cultural landscape.

Drawing on examples from the conference, Dr Chavura touched on major themes such as the centrality of the family unit, and the indispensable role of Christianity in the development and preservation of Western civilisation.

In his concluding remarks, Dr Chavura encouraged students to keep an eye on future ARC events, which are increasingly open to the public. He emphasised the importance of being intellectually equipped and culturally aware in an age where many of Campion’s core values are contested. “It’s a great excuse to go to England,” he joked, “but more than that, it’s an opportunity to be part of something hopeful, serious and deeply needed.”

The talk was followed by a lively Q&A session. See below for photos from the night.
