Faith, Law, and Hope for the Future: Dr Rocco Loiacono Addresses Formal Hall
Campion College’s Formal Hall on Thursday, 18 September 2025 welcomed guest speaker Dr Rocco Loiacono, senior lecturer in the Curtin University Law School, for an evening of reflection on the rule of law, Christianity, and the challenges facing both in Australia today.
After music by student performers Clare Horsfall and Reshan Weerakkody and a shared meal, Dr Loiacono began his keynote address with humour and a nod to his home city of Perth, before turning to the deeper themes of his lecture. He spoke of his strong belief in Australia’s federation, drawing a parallel with Catholic social teaching, noting that he sees “similarities between the idea of a federation and the principle of subsidiarity, which directs that matters ought to be handled at multiple levels of organisation and not just by a centralised authority.”
He reminded students that “the rule of law and Christianity are inextricably linked,” emphasising that the framers of the Australian Constitution were guided by Christian principles, including the dignity of the human person. This, he explained, is why “Christian principles inform legal ideas and approaches,” and why protecting them is essential to justice and freedom.
Dr Loiacono acknowledged challenges facing the rule of law in contemporary Australia, particularly when laws are treated as mere instruments of power or political agendas. Yet he balanced this with a message of encouragement, pointing to signs of renewal including a resurgence of young people seeking truth, tradition, and faith.
Reflecting on his encounters with law students across the country, Dr Loiacono said they want to restore the profession as “the guardian of the rule of law,” committed to principles shaped by Christianity rather than shifting ideologies. He closed with a challenge to students, quoting the anthropologist Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
Another highlight of the night was the celebration of Campion College’s recent Cardinal’s Cup triumph, with students proudly marking their soccer victory and adding to the joyful spirit of the evening.
