Campion College welcomed Fr Sean Byrnes, Vocations Director for the Diocese of Wagga Wagga, for the Annual Vianney Lecture, where he examined pornography and its false promise of escape from reality.

The lecture forms part of Campion College’s ongoing relationship with Vianney College, Seminary of the Diocese of Wagga Wagga, and drew on the work of its Dean of Studies and former Campion College lecturer Dr Matthew Tan.

Fr Byrnes argued that one of the defining characteristics of pornography is its promise of escape into a fabricated world. Drawing attention to the Catechism of the Catholic Church’s description of pornography as immersing those who use it in a “fantasy world”, he suggested that this aspect goes to the heart of the problem.

Pornography, he said, offers an escape from the demands, difficulties and wounds of ordinary life, but cannot provide the fulfilment it promises.

“Pornography offers a fantasy that never delivers,” Fr Byrnes said. “Christ, our true saviour, offers a salvation that demands we confront reality as it is through all of our wounds, hardships and difficulties.”

Rather than seeking refuge from difficult realities, Fr Byrnes encouraged those struggling to bring them into the light — through prayer and the sacraments, but also through trusted friendships, accountability and appropriate professional support.

He emphasised that this Christian response is ultimately grounded in the dignity of the human person and the conviction that people are made for something more substantial than fantasy.

“We are made for life. We are made for reality,” he said. “We’re not made for some cheap fantasy. We’re not made for a life of promises that are left unfulfilled. We’re made for eternal life.”

Campion College thanks Fr Byrnes for sharing his insights with the College community and looks forward to welcoming the next Annual Vianney Lecture in 2027.
