Honouring Tradition and Community at Campion’s First Formal Hall of 2025

Campion College marked the beginning of the 2025 academic year with its first Formal Hall last night.
Dr. Paul Morrissey, President of Campion College, opened the evening with a warm address, particularly extending his welcome to first-year students attending their inaugural Formal Hall. He reflected on the significance of this tradition, emphasising its deep roots in both the academic and Christian heritage of the College.
“Eating and drinking have always been an intrinsic part of Christian culture,” Dr. Morrissey noted. “We sustain our bodies by eating and drinking, but eating is not just about our bodies. Eating affects our soul. We are not just animals; we are rational animals, and what, how, and how much we eat is important.” He highlighted how Formal Halls cultivate the virtue of temperance, ordering meals and social engagement to a higher good.
The evening also served as an opportunity to honour a beloved member of the Campion College community, Marian Foster, who was in attendance as part of her farewell to the College. Having served Campion College for over 13 years, Marian was warmly acknowledged for her dedication and impact on staff and students alike.
Speaking to the gathering, Marian reflected on her time at the College. “Interacting with students was very special—whether it was at events, helping them in any way, or when they visited my office to have a chat, a cup of tea, and a biscuit or two,” she shared. Addressing the first-year students, she encouraged them to embrace all that Campion College has to offer. “As well as your studies, there are many activities and events to enjoy. But please make sure that you get enough sleep!”
The evening concluded with a moving musical performance of ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Misérables, performed by Caleb Smith and Reshan Weerakkody.
With the first Formal Hall of the year setting a tone of formality, tradition, and camaraderie, students and staff alike look forward to many more such evenings in 2025.
