This unit of study traces the historical development of Catholic life and teaching. Students completing this unit will have a body of knowledge related to Catholic teachings, an awareness of its principles of development and an understanding of how this can be presented to students at various levels. They will be able to undertake professional work in this field of and also use it as a basis for further learning.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

a) demonstrate specialised knowledge of the historical development of Church teaching and an awareness of contemporary scholarship in this field;
b) synthesise relevant knowledge from classic and contemporary sources relating to the development of Church teaching in the context of a historical study of the Catholic Church;
c) evaluate the suitability of content and method relating to explanations regarding the development of Catholic teaching in a historical context for primary school students;
d) communicate an understanding of content and concepts related to the historical development of Catholic teaching to a variety of audiences including primary school students of different developmental levels, other staff members, religious education specialists, parents and carers of their students;
e) adapt concepts related to the historical context of Catholic teaching to the developmental needs of primary school children.
