Overview

This unit explores major world events in the twentieth century. The focus is on the intellectual and scientific developments at the turn of the century, the First World War, the Russian Revolution, the Rise of the Weimar Republic, the rise of totalitarian and Fascist Regimes, the Great Depression, the Interwar Period, the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War, the Holocaust and the cultural and political institutions, events and tensions of the Cold War Period and its aftermath. While exploring the ways in which science, politics and religion interact and combine in a growingly global society, the unit will also examine the different ways historians approach and interpret the recent past.

Learning outcomes

The unit learning outcomes develop in students an awareness of the value and relevance of the study strand. On completion of this unit of study, students will be able to:

a) demonstrate an understanding of the problems in twentieth century historiography
b) demonstrate an understanding of the major events and processes of the twentieth century
c) critically evaluate primary sources
d) compare and contrast the various ideological trends and their implications for the understanding of twentieth-century history and historiography
e) engage in independent research and critically evaluate conflicting scholarship
f) effectively and confidently participate in tutorials and contribute with clarity and coherence
g) write well-argued and well-structured essays and appropriately use references and bibliographies according to academic conventions.
