Overview
This unit of study traces the historical development of Catholic life and teaching from the early Church through to today’s post conciliar Church. Students completing this unit will develop a body of knowledge related to Catholic teaching and the history of the Catholic Church. This unit will explore how to engage adolescent students in a deep understanding of Catholic teaching and history through a liberal arts approach, the use of provocation of thought, discussion, reflection, contemplation, prayer and meditation.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate specialised knowledge of the historical development of Church teaching and an awareness of contemporary scholarship in this field;
- synthesise relevant knowledge from classic and contemporary sources relating to the development of Church teaching in the context of an historical study of the Catholic Church employing a liberal arts approach;
- evaluate the suitability of content and method relating to explanations regarding the development of Catholic teaching in an historical context for secondary school students;
- communicate an understanding of content and concepts related to the historical development of Catholic teaching to a variety of audiences including secondary school students of different developmental levels, other staff members and parents;
- adapt concepts related to the historical context of Catholic teaching to the developmental needs of secondary school students incorporating a liberal arts approach, the use of provocation of thought, discussion, reflection, contemplation, prayer and meditation.
