Overview

This unit of study examines key aspects of Catholic life and teaching through the lens of faith and reason (theology and philosophy). Students completing this unit will develop a body of knowledge related to Catholic theology and philosophy and an understanding of how this can be taught to secondary students at various levels. Key principles of effective contemporary pedagogy for adolescents in religious education permeate the unit with the incorporation of a liberal arts approach, the use of provocation of thought, discussion, reflection, contemplation, prayer and meditation. Students in this unit will be able to undertake professional work in this field and use it as a basis for further learning.

 

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate specialised knowledge of the relationship of faith and reason in understanding Church teaching and an awareness of contemporary scholarship in this field;
  2. synthesise relevant knowledge from classic and contemporary sources relating to the relationship of faith and reason in understanding Church teaching;
  3. evaluate the suitability of content and method relating to explanations regarding the relationship of faith and reason in understanding Catholic teaching for secondary school students;
  4. communicate an understanding of content and concepts related to the relationship of faith and reason in understanding Catholic teaching to a variety of audiences including secondary school students of different developmental levels, other staff members and parents;
  5. adapt concepts related to the relationship of faith and reason in understanding Catholic teaching to the developmental needs of secondary school students incorporating a liberal arts approach, the use of provocation of thought, discussion, reflection, contemplation, prayer and meditation.
