Overview
This unit of study explores the fulfilment of Salvation history in the incarnation, cross and the resurrection of Jesus Christ as presented in the Christian New Testament and the Christological and Trinitarian formulations reached by the Church. In addition to becoming familiar with a selection of writings from the New Testament, students will be introduced to a variety of related topics, including canonicity, inspiration, the relationship between Scripture and Tradition, and approaches to the reading and study of the sacred texts within the norms of the exegesis of the Church.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this unit of study, students will be able to:
- Understand the literary genres, rhetorical approaches, and theological themes present in the New Testament writings
- Identify the ethical, spiritual, and existential questions raised by the New Testament writings
- Analyse New Testament writings within the framework of Catholic teaching
- Explain the enduring literary and cultural legacy of the New Testament within Western civilisation
- Demonstrate competencies in and understanding of theological thinking and its relationship to theological writing and discourse
- Work collaboratively to create a supportive environment for class discussion
