Overview
This unit explores the history and theology of sacred art and architecture from the early middle-ages to the present day. Beginning with the theology of the icon as developed in Eastern Christendom in the early middle-ages, the unit progresses through a historical and theological study of Roman and Gothic art and architecture in Western Christendom, and continues through the Renaissance, Baroque and modern periods. Students will draw on their training in both history and theology to examine the relationship between sacred art and architecture and a variety of historical and theological contexts, issues and themes, and develop skills in interpreting and writing about sacred art. This unit may be counted towards the Theology and History majors.
