Overview
The Catholic Church teaches that Scripture stands at the heart of theology and the teaching and handing on of the Faith. At the same time, the works of the Bible stand at the heart of the culture of the West more generally. This unit introduces students to the study of theology, in a liberal arts context, through a Christian reading of the books of the Bible. In this semester, students read a selection of writings from the Old Testament and become familiar with the great narratives, literary forms, events and people of these texts, including the story of creation, Exodus, and selections from the Prophets and Wisdom Books.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this unit of study, students will be able to:
- Understand the theological, cultural and literary significance of selected texts from the Old Testament

- Analyse and describe the aesthetic, rhetorical and poetic qualities of Old Testament literature
- Explore and explain the connections between Old Testament narratives, characters and motifs and the person and revelation of Christ as interpreted by the Catholic Church
