Overview
An introduction to the foundations of mathematics and mathematical thought provides, first, a basis for further studies in mathematics, and second, a broad sweep of mathematical ideas for those who do not plan to study more mathematics but wish to appreciate the role of mathematics in liberal education. The aim is to expose students to the basic structure of sound thinking, thereby increasing the clarity and force of their own thought and expression and aiding them in the intelligent analysis of the ideas of others.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- understand key mathematical ideas;
- appreciate the importance of mathematics as a liberal discipline that assists in the development of logical thinking;
- demonstrate the ability to research, summarise and communicate in a logical and lucid manner;
- demonstrate confidence in constructive participation in group work and tutorial events by undertaking required readings and developmental exercises, and by contributing with clarity and coherence;
- demonstrate skills in clear written expression, concise logical essay structure, and the appropriate use of referencing and bibliography in compliance with academic conventions.
