Overview

This unit introduces the student to the main historical features of the differential calculus through three problems which motivate the unit. It builds on what has been done at high school and provides sufficient detail for the mathematically literate citizen to have a conceptual framework with which to view the physical world.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
a) demonstrate an understanding of the main historical features of the differential calculus;
b) demonstrate the ability to apply a mathematics-based conceptual framework for studying key concepts in relation to the physical world;
c) demonstrate the ability to undertake research, summarise and communicate in a logical and coherent manner;
d) demonstrate developing skills in clear written expression, concise logical structuring of ideas, and the appropriate use of referencing and bibliography in compliance with academic conventions;
e) demonstrate developing confidence in constructive participation in group work and tutorial events by undertaking required readings and developmental exercises, and by contributing with clarity and coherence.
