Overview
In this unit the student develops an indepth study of two research topics drawn from the undergraduate disciplines. Topics will ordinarily be derived from existing undergraduate units or units not previously taken, and students are expected to attend weekly lectures in the units. Students will undertake research on selected topics, including research methods in the relevant area, with the guidance of a supervisor (normally the coordinator of the corresponding unit of study). In the process, students will gain experience carrying out advanced independent research by choosing research topics, and writing two 5000-word essays, one on each topic, and undertaking a ‘viva’ for each essay. Additional teaching will be via a supervision corresponding to each of the selected research topics.
Learning outcomes
Successful completion of this unit will enable students to:
- Identify specific research topics
- Compile a list of primary and secondary sources on each topic
- Evaluate research methods relevant to the topics;
- Consider ethical issues relevant to the research projects and plan accordingly;
- Produce clear, elegant and persuasive long essays reflecting your understanding of the research topic
- Defend your argument and methodology in a ‘viva’ for each topic
