Overview

This unit of study presents a broad introduction to the study of history and the context of Western history. It examines several approaches to historical inquiry and examples of the ways in which those approaches have been put into practice. The periods, people and themes studied include Ancient Greece, Alexander the Great, the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, and Marxism. Each of these topics introduces students to new themes in Western history and new methodologies in historical inquiry.

Learning outcomes

Successful completion of this unit will enable students to:

a) identify some of the major historical events which have influenced the development of Western culture;
b) identify and assess the methods and models used in historical inquiry;
c) appreciate the distinctive characteristics of Christianity in key historical periods and demonstrate the historical relationship between Christianity and Western culture;
d) develop an ability to summarise and communicate historical and historiographical concepts in a logical and coherent manner;
e) develop a capacity for effective essay writing, including clear written expression, concise logical essay structure, and the appropriate use of referencing and bibliography in accordance with academic conventions;
f) strengthen confidence and skills to participate in group work and tutorial events by undertaking required readings and contributing with clarity and coherence.
